The EU Missions in Jerusalem and
Ramallah condemn the death sentence
issued in Gaza

ondemn the death sentence issued by the de
facto authorities in Gaza on 8 D
ecember and their confirmation of an earlier death sentence on
5 December."
As in their most recent statement on 4 Octobe
r, the EU Missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah
recall the EU's firm opposition under all circum
stances to the use of capital punishment. The
EU considers that abolition of the death pena
lty contributes to the enhancement of human
dignity and the progressive deve
lopment of human rights. It c
onsiders capital punishment to
be cruel and inhuman, that it fa
ils to provide deterre
nce to criminal behaviour, and represents
an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity.
The de facto authorities in Gaza must refrain
from carrying out any executions of prisoners
and comply with the moratorium on execution
s put in place by the Palestinian Authority,
pending abolition of the death pena
lty in line with the global trend
